The summer holidays are brilliant… until someone flops onto the sofa and announces, “I’m booooored.”
Before you start searching for expensive days out, here’s the good news: boredom can actually be the beginning of something brilliant.
When children have time to explore, build, create and experiment, they often learn without even realising it. They ask questions, test ideas, make mistakes, try again and proudly announce, “Look what I made!”
You don’t need fancy equipment either. Many of the best summer activities for kids use things you already have at home: cardboard boxes, paper, tape, vinegar, baking soda, leaves, sticks, balloons and a bit of imagination.
Here are five simple, screen-free activities you can set up without spending a fortune.

1. Go on a Nature Hunt
A nature hunt is one of the easiest ways to get children outside and noticing the world around them. You can do it in the garden, at the park, in the woods or even on a walk around the block.
You will need
- Paper or notebook
- Pencil or crayons
- Optional: magnifying glass
- Optional: small bag or tub for collecting items, where allowed
How to do it
- Write a short checklist of things to find, such as:
- Something green
- A yellow flower
- A feather
- A tiny insect
- A rough leaf
- A bird sound
- Something that smells interesting
- Head outside and let your child tick off each item as they spot it.
- Ask them to choose one thing to draw or describe.
- Finish with a few curiosity questions:
- What was easiest to find?
- What was hardest?
- Where did we spot the most insects?
- Why do you think some plants grow in sunny spots?
Extra idea
Try a bark rubbing. Place paper over tree bark and gently rub over it with the side of a crayon. Children will see the texture appear on the page.

2. Get Creative with Cardboard
An old cardboard box can become almost anything: a rocket, castle, shop, puppet theatre, robot or dinosaur cave.

You will need
- Cardboard boxes or cereal boxes
- Toilet roll or kitchen roll tubes
- Tape
- Glue
- Pens, crayons or paint
- Child-safe scissors
- Stickers, foil, string or recycled packaging
How to do it
- Set up a making area on a table, tray, floor mat or outside.
- Put out a few materials, but don’t over-direct.
- Give your child one simple challenge:
- Build a robot
- Make a puppet theatre
- Create a cardboard town
- Build a bridge for toy cars
- Make a marble run
- Ask them to draw a quick plan first.
- Let them build, decorate and test their creation.
- Ask, “What could make it stronger, taller or more exciting?”

Tape a large piece of cardboard to a wall or box lid. Cut cardboard tubes in half lengthways to make tracks. Tape them onto the board at different angles, then drop a marble or small ball from the top.
If it gets stuck, move the tubes and try again. That’s problem-solving in action.

3. Become a Scientist with a Baking Soda Volcano
This is a classic for a reason. It’s quick to set up, exciting to watch and usually gets a very enthusiastic “again!”
You will need
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Washing-up liquid
- Food colouring
- Small cup, jar or plastic bottle
- Tray or baking dish
- Spoon
How to do it
- Place your cup, jar or bottle in the middle of a tray.
- Add 2–3 spoonfuls of baking soda.
- Add a few drops of food colouring.
- Add a small squirt of washing-up liquid.
- Slowly pour in vinegar and watch the eruption.
- Try again, changing one thing at a time. Use more vinegar, more baking soda or a different container.
What’s happening?
Baking soda and vinegar react together and produce carbon dioxide gas. The gas creates bubbles, and the washing-up liquid makes the eruption extra foamy.

- What made the bubbles?
- What could we change to make a bigger eruption?
A little mess is part of the fun. A tray is your friend.
4. Make a Homemade Lava Lamp
This colourful experiment is great for a quieter afternoon and helps children explore liquids, bubbles and density.
You will need
- Clear bottle or jar
- Water
- Vegetable oil
- Food colouring
- Fizzy vitamin tablet or effervescent tablet
- Tray or towel
How to do it
- Fill the bottle about one quarter full with water.
- Add vegetable oil until the bottle is nearly full.
- Wait and watch the layers separate.
- Add a few drops of food colouring.
- Break a fizzy tablet into pieces and drop one piece into the bottle.
- Watch the coloured bubbles rise and fall.
- Add another small piece of tablet when the bubbles slow down.
What’s happening?
Oil floats on top of water because it is less dense. The fizzy tablet creates gas bubbles, which carry coloured water upwards. When the bubbles pop, the water sinks again.

- What happened to the food colouring?
- What happens if we add a bigger piece of tablet?
It looks like magic, but it’s science doing a very good impression.
5. Build a Balloon-Powered Car
This is a brilliant STEM project because children can build it, test it, race it and improve it.
It also shows how air can create movement.
You will need
- Cardboard
- 4 bottle tops or toy wheels
- 2 straws
- 2 wooden skewers or straight sticks
- Balloon
- Tape
- Scissors
- Optional: stickers or pens for decorating
How to do it
- Cut a rectangle of cardboard for the car body.
- Tape two straws underneath the cardboard, one near the front and one near the back.
- Push a skewer through each straw.
- Attach bottle tops or wheels to the ends. An adult may need to make small holes in bottle tops first.
- Check the wheels spin freely.
- Put a straw into the neck of a balloon and tape it tightly.
- Tape the straw and balloon to the top of the car, with the straw pointing backwards.
- Blow up the balloon through the straw, pinch it closed, place the car on the floor and let go.
- Test different designs. Can you make it go further?
Ask your child
- What makes the car move?
- Does it travel further on carpet or a smooth floor?
- What happens if the car is too heavy?
- How could we make it faster?
This is exactly how engineering works: build, test, improve, repeat.
